While summarizing a book, providing a condensed version of the authors book.

Summaries can be a few sentences or long. You need to summarize ones article if you are going to fully understand their argument or main ideas.

Before summarizing a source, see what your reader needs to know to understand what your stance is for the argument. Do not include all the background information and examples.

When to paraphrase:

This is when you restate the sources idea in your own words.

Summaries are a complete overview of what took place and give details and more information

When using any part of a source in your paper you have decide if you want to quote the author or paraphrase it. If you are paraphrasing it, you need to make it clear on why you are using this information.

When to quote and how much:

You should quote a text when you want your readers to see the language being used by the source.

It allows you to introduce the reader to the authors view point and language.
